As promised, I have a milk paint tutorial for you today.   I love Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint and for this project I used the color Kitchen Scale.

Milk Paint comes in powder form.  You mix equal part water and paint powder.  I used about one cup of powder and one cup of water to do a large dresser.

When you mix it, you can use a mixer and make sure there are no clumps, however I like to leave a few clumps in there because it streaks the different colors used to make the paint and it adds great depth and authenticity to your piece.

I like this paint because I can throw on a sloppy coat of paint and let the paint do the magic.

Once it starts to dry it will begin to bubble and flake.  This is the exciting part!  You never know where it will flake off or if it will at all.  Sometimes it starts to flake right away and sometimes it takes 30 minutes to start to flake.

Once it has flaked, you can start sanding.  I prefer the old chippy look so I just take a scraper and scrape the whole dresser lightly.

Once I scrape it I do sand the edges lightly with 100 grit sandpaper and then put a wax on top.  I use Annie Sloan Clear Wax which seals the paint and doesn’t allow it to continue to flake off.  It also gives a rich look to the wood showing through.

Will you give Milk Paint a try?
